Why this tour

3,000 years of history on a ridge between two seas.

On the spine of Mesa Vouno, 369 metres above the sea, the ruins of Ancient Thira tell a layered story that spans Dorian settlers, Ptolemaic Egypt, and the Roman Empire.

Founded in the 9th century BC by Dorian colonists from Sparta, the city grew to include an agora, a theatre cut into the rock, sanctuaries to Apollo Karneios and Artemis, and houses with mosaic floors. The Ptolemies later established a garrison here; the Romans added baths and engineering.

We start early to beat the heat. A licensed archaeologist guides you through the ruins, pointing out inscriptions, carvings and architectural details that most visitors walk straight past. The panorama — Kamari and Perissa beaches below, the open Aegean beyond — is worth the climb alone.

Getting there

We drive to the car park at the base of Mesa Vouno. A 20-minute switchback road leads to the site entrance. No cable cars here.

The agora & theatre

The civic heart of the ancient city, with inscriptions still legible in the rock. The theatre seated around 1,500.

After the tour

We can drop you at Kamari or Perissa beach for a swim and taverna lunch — both sit at the base of the mountain.

Best time to visit

May, June, September. Mid-summer is hot and shadeless. We depart early to avoid peak heat.
