The Santorini volcano tour, done properly.
Sail the caldera. Climb a live crater. Swim the iron-warm hot springs. The one experience every first visit to Santorini deserves.
The only way to truly understand Santorini is from the water.
Santorini is a caldera — the flooded mouth of one of the largest volcanic eruptions in human history. The cliffs you photograph from Fira, the black sand of Perissa, the white houses of Oia: all of it is the rim and the debris of that eruption. You cannot grasp it from a sunset bar.
The Santorini volcano tour takes you across the caldera to Nea Kameni, the young, still-active volcanic island at its centre. You hike to the crater with a licensed guide, then swim into the iron-rich thermal waters of Palea Kameni — the clearest, simplest, most honest day on the island.
We run small groups, traditional wooden boats, and guides who actually live here. No coach-park scale, no scripted commentary.
A relaxed, well-paced itinerary.
Times are indicative — the captain reads the wind and the light. Sunset extension shown for reference.
- 09:30
Boarding at the Old Port of Fira
Meet your guide on the quay below Fira. Step aboard a traditional wooden kaiki and settle in as we leave the harbour.
- 10:00
Sail to Nea Kameni — the active volcano
A 20-minute crossing across the caldera to the black volcanic island that is still building Santorini, eruption by eruption.
- 10:30
Guided hike to the crater (≈ 30 min up)
A licensed guide leads a slow, story-led walk to the rim of the active crater at 130 m. Sulphur vents, lava fields, and one of the great views of the caldera.
- 12:00
Swim at the Palea Kameni hot springs
Anchor in the cove and swim in to the iron-rich thermal waters. Bring a swimsuit you don't mind staining a soft ochre.
- 13:30
Optional: Thirassia lunch stop
On the full-day version, we cross to the small island of Thirassia for a relaxed taverna lunch above the harbour.
- 17:00
Sunset under the cliffs of Oia
On the sunset extension, we drift below Oia as the cliffs catch the last light. Back at port by 20:00.
Three ways to do it.
- Everything in half-day
- Thirassia lunch stop
- Oia sunset return
- ≈ 8–9 hours
- Sailing or motor catamaran
- Up to 16 guests
- Crew of two
- Bespoke route
