The best thing you can do on Santorini costs nothing but a morning: the rim path from Fira to Oia, past Firostefani, Imerovigli and Skaros Rock.
The caldera walk follows the edge of a flooded volcanic crater for about 10.5 km, from the cathedral square in Fira to the castle ruins in Oia. It is half village cobbles, half raw volcanic footpath, and it is the only way to understand the shape of the island.
Section by section
Fira to Firostefani — 25 minutes, paved
Flat and easy, along the cliff walkway past hotels and cafés. The blue-domed church of Agios Theodori at the end of Firostefani is the photograph everyone has seen.
Firostefani to Imerovigli — 30 minutes, paved with steps
Gentle uphill to the highest point on the rim. Imerovigli is the last village with shops, water and toilets before Oia — top up here, it matters.
Skaros Rock detour — 45 minutes return, steep
A volcanic promontory with the remains of a 13th-century Venetian castle and, on the far side, the tiny chapel of Theoskepasti. Steep, loose descent and climb back. Worth it if you have the legs.
Imerovigli to Oia — 2 to 2.5 hours, unpaved
The real walk. The path leaves the villages behind, climbs over a red-earth ridge and traverses open scrub with the caldera on your left the whole way. No shade, no water, no shops, patchy phone signal in a couple of dips. You will pass more chapels than people.
How long it takes
Plan four to five hours including stops and photos — about 3.5 hours of walking for a reasonably fit person. Add the Skaros detour and it becomes a solid five.
When to walk it
Start at 07:00–08:00 in summer and you will finish before the worst heat. April, May, October and early November are ideal. Never start after 11:00 in July or August; the exposed middle section is genuinely dangerous in 35°C with no water.
What to take
- Trail shoes or trainers with grip — the middle section is loose scree in places.
- Two litres of water per person minimum. There is nowhere to refill after Imerovigli.
- Hat, sunglasses, high-SPF sunscreen, and a light wind layer for the rim.
- Cash for the bus or a taverna in Oia at the end.
Getting back from Oia
KTEL buses run Oia → Fira roughly every 30 minutes until late, €2.50, and are packed around sunset. Taxis are scarce and expensive. On our guided walk the return transfer is included, so you can stay in Oia for lunch, swim at Ammoudi, or wait for the sunset and still get back easily.
Guided or on your own?
The route is well marked and thousands walk it unaccompanied. A guide adds the geology of what you are looking at, the history of Skaros, the chapels most people walk past, the pacing to keep you out of the midday sun — and the transfer home. Either way, do it.
Common questions about caldera walking tour
How long is the Fira to Oia caldera walk?
About 10.5 km along the caldera rim, or roughly 12 km including the Skaros Rock detour. Most walkers take four to five hours including photo and drink stops.
Is the Fira to Oia walk difficult?
Moderate. The first half is paved village walkway; the second half is unpaved with some steep, loose sections and no shade or water. Trail shoes and two litres of water per person are essential.
What is the best time of day to walk the caldera path?
Start between 07:00 and 08:00 in summer so you finish before the midday heat. Spring and autumn allow a later start, and the light on the caldera is best in the first two hours of the day.
How do you get back from Oia to Fira?
KTEL buses run about every 30 minutes for €2.50 but are very crowded around sunset. Taxis are scarce; on a guided walk the return transfer is included.
Can you walk from Fira to Oia without a guide?
Yes, the route is well marked and busy in season. A guide is worth it for the context, the pacing in summer heat, and the included transfer back from Oia.
